Heart & Art

THE PORTRAIT PROCESS – AN IMPORTANT UNDERSTANDING

•  I DON’T DO ANY PAINTING

•  ALL OF THE PAINTING, MARKS, CONSTRUCTIONS IN THESE IMAGES ARE CREATED BY THE SUBJECT.  THEIR WORDS, THEIR ART, THEIR HEART

THE PORTRAIT PROCESS
– unexpected truth of experience –

But there is an art which is better than painting, poetry, music, or architecture,—better than botany, geology, or any science; namely, Conversation. Conversation is our account of ourselves.  Woman – Emerson

Ann Z. and Jon O.

All of these portraits derive from a Conversation (not an interview) between myself and the
subject.

In the course of this Conversation, which often maintains for hours, the subject will unconsciously strike upon some  feeling that is true to them and their heart. Not a thought out reaction, but an extemporaneous inner truth.  An “unexpected truth of experience”

Working from this “unexpected truth”, the subject then uses the paint and or paper to construct a
setting for their portrait.  All of the words, marks, constructions are executed by the subject.
